Elvia Alvarez, 84, of Las Vegas, NV passed away peacefully on July 26, 2024. Her loss has only reminded her family the importance of loving those around you while you can. She was born on February 17, 1940, in the town of Tepeapulco, Hidalgo to Victoria and Palemon Martinez. She was the youngest of their children and is preceded in death by the love of her life Francisco Alvarez and all but one sibling (Edmundo Martinez). She is survived by her three children Alex, Victoria, Lily son in law (Shane), and five grandchildren Josh, Arlicia, Lauren, Salvador, and Caia.
Elvia often reflected on her childhood as one of adventure, hard work, love and faith. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 19. Despite only having received a formal education to the 4th grade, she taught herself a second language and worked tirelessly to provide a life of opportunity for her children and grandchildren.
Elvia respected all of God’s creations from the smallest seed to the vastness of the stars. She was a faithful wife, mother, and devoted grandmother. Her spirituality created the foundation for which her children and family were built on. She valued the power of laughter and would use neighborhood chisme to teach valuable lessons to those around her.
Elvia was often referred to as an angel on earth. She was devoted to her family, church and community. She loved to love people. She gave in everyday ways, picking up trash on her walks, cooking a meal for someone she didn’t know, giving of her time and money to those in need. People were drawn to her because of her ability to listen without judgment and provide wise counsel. She encouraged them to believe in the divine and to never lose hope in miracles. She never met a stranger or made an enemy.
Her accomplishments left behind are not those of riches or publications, but rather of love and faith. She taught us to love without abandon, to fight for what is right and speak out against what is wrong. Her legacy is one of light, hope, and laughter. While she is missed deeply, she is now in the place she dreamed of her entire life. May she dance on the roads of heaven and watch over us until we meet again.
