Emma Jean Smith

June 18, 1931 — April 13, 2006

Emma Jean Smith,74 a 43 year resident of Las Vegas died suddenly May 13,2006. She was born June 15,1931 in Forrest City, Arkansas to Dan and Minnie Christian.  She and her five siblings spent their childhoods on several share-crop farms around Baldwyn, Miss. where she graduated from high school in 1949.

In 1952, Jean obtained an RN degree from the Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Memphis, Tenn.  She worked as a nurse in the Memphis VA hospital until 1954 when she entered the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant.  Jean was stationed at several bases in New York, Ohio, Alabama, England and Germany.  She served as a flight nurse while stationed in Europe.  After that tour of duty, she was ordered to a hospital at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, Texas, where she met Donald Smith a newly commissioned veterinarian officer.  They fell in love and were married, June 25,1960.Donald and Jean left the services in 1961 and spent two years in Oregon where Jean worked as a surgical nurse.  In 1963,they moved to Las Vegas.  Jean continued to be active in her profession for the next few years as well as raising her children, son, Kevin and daughter, Army.  She eventually retired from nursing to become a homemaker, Jean loved gardening, cooking, canning and bingo.  She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for over 40 years, a member of the Society of Air Force Nurses and of the 7167th Air Transport Squadron Reunion Group.  Jean was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, W.C. and Roy Christian; an infant daughter, Kathleen; and her son, Kevin who died at the age of 19, in 1984.  She is survied by two sisters, Viola Searcy and Velma Freeze; a brother, Eugene Christian, all of Mississippi; husband Donald; and daughter, Amy of Las Vegas.

Jean's compassion, good humor, generosity and loving nature will be sorely missed byher family and many friends who are scattered throughout the country.

Vistation will be from 5-7 p. Wednesday, May 17,2006

Interment following at Bunkers Memory Gardens
