Illona Ommen, longtime resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on November 6, 2019 after battling a long term illness.
Illona was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malasia to loving parents and was one of three sisters. A survivor of a terrible war, she overcame impossible odds as a child and went on to lead a fascinating life. She went to boarding school in Australia where she hunted kangaroo, she went to nursing school in London where she narrowly missed an opportunity to see the Beatles at the Cavern Club because she had to study for a test, and ultimately ended up moving to the United States in 1964(New York).
She was a nurse, model and administrative assistant while living overseas, but after coming to Las Vegas in 1972, she had a long public service career with the State of Nevada within the Welfare, Food Stamps and Child Support divisions. She took her job very seriously, and was well respected by those with whom she worked for her diligence and strong work ethic.
As a single mother, she worked hard to provide for her daughter Amber, and made many sacrifices along the way. She always put her daughters needs first. Illona met the love of her life, Wesley Ommen, on a blind date in 1979. They married one year later and were still happily married at the time of her death. Illona had an amazing mind, Mensa wanted her to join there organization, she could not be beaten at scrabble, crosswords were child's play for her, and when she watched jeopardy, she answered most of the questions right. She was an avid reader, and consumed books and newspapers. She loved to watch the news and enjoyed cookingshows. Her wicked sense of humor is reflected in one of her song choices for her Memorial Service, "Another One Bites The Dust", by Queen.
Illona is survived by her husband Wesley Ommen, daughter; Amber Meyer(Keith Meyer), and stepson, Richard Ommen.
There will be a private memorial service at Bunker Mortuary in Las Vegas
