Stephen V. Catalanotto, 81 of Henderson, Nevada died on September 17,2006. He was a retired sandwich shop owner and a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Steve was born on May 30,1925 in Boston. He served in the U.S. Navy as a cook on the destroyer escort USS Weber during World War II. On November 22,1947, he married Joanne Sardo in Boston. Their daughter Chris was born on march 4, 1953 and in 1956, they moved to Los Angeles. In January of 1962, they moved to Phoenix, where he purchased his uncle's Little Venice Restaurant. Later he opened a pizzeria in the Thomas Mall which he operated until 1976 when he and Joanne moved to Las Vegas. In 1977, he opened a sandwich shop, Joanne's Deli on Industrial Road and added a second location on Valley View when his daughter Chris joined him in 1979. After selling Joanne's Deli, he opened Sunset Sandwiches on Sunset Road in Henderson in 1985. Steve and Chris worked together there until October, 1991, when he closed his business and returned to woodcarving instead of making sandwiches. His kidneys began to fail, however. On November 3, 1997, after months of dialysis, Steve experienced the miracle of a kidney transplant and 19 days later, he and Joanne celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends. Over his many years in his pizza and sandwich business, his employees and customers became his valued friends who will always remember Stevie for his warm smile and easy-going attitude. He was a man who never spoke an unkind word about anyone. To his family, he was our Papa, always interested in our goings on and our accomplishments. His genuine smile and sincere " Really" were always the response to whatever news we told him.
He was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a wonderful man. He will remain in our hearts forever.
Steve is survived by his wife Joanne; his daughter, Chris Power and her husband John; grandchildren, Katie, Tessie and Sean Power(all of Henderson);sisters, Pauline Silva of Brockton, Mass.,and Rosalie Savignano of Watertown, Mass.; and sister-in-law, Concetta Butera of Boston.
